Okay, committing for [profile] productivityhour‘s weekend. By Sunday night, I will:

edit 150 pages

go running

buy a phone case

pay bills

maybe weed the back yard (the humidity has it being over 40C/104F today and possibly tomorrow, there’s a limit to how much outside time I’m willing to deal with)

see friends for dinner

do all the laundry

provide story crit

break 10,000 words on that damn novella

resign from a time commitment

clear out twenty emails

update my Hugo voting

finish a book

Alright. Those are things like progress.

Okay, so far:

edit 150 pages - maybe? 2/5ths of the way done, but currently on hold while I see about a less painful file format to work with.

go running

buy a phone case

pay bills

maybe weed the back yard (the humidity has it being over 40C/104F today and possibly tomorrow, there’s a limit to how much outside time I’m willing to deal with) - yep, nope, the humidex hit 45 (which is 113 in Farenheit). Not this weekend.

see friends for dinner - yay!

do all the laundry - in progress

provide story crit

break 10,000 words on that damn novella

resign from a time commitment

clear out twenty emails

update my Hugo voting

finish a book - yes, another one. Yes, I have finished five graphic novels, seven books, and a teeny chapbook so far this month. My tsundoku pile is still higher than it was at the end of June and yes, I know.

Not everything I hoped for today, but a lot. I’ll see how tomorrow goes.

Progressing through the year continues:

I still have 35 fics on my to-do list. (It was not a super productive month.)

I have 11 original stories to revise or rewrite; hoping to nail at least one this month. (Also one to give a last comb-through, and the weird thing I’ve been working on, but neither of those are gonna be full revisions… They’re still things I need to work on before I can release them, though. Okay, 13 things to revise or rewrite.)

I am up to 242 books (from 238 last month) at the intersection of “owned” and “to-read” in Goodreads. I blame the Hugos giving me multiple free books, and a couple of Kickstarters delivering. (That said, I also finished 7 books this month, so that’s a plus.)

Trip to ReaderCon coming up! Also need to figure out what I’m doing in Dublin-and-nearby-places in August.

My “so-and-so has posted…” notifications from AO3 are at 157, out of 342 unread emails (45.91%).

For GYWO: 61 days of writing so far.

as someone with a bachelor’s degree in english, i am inexpressibly tired of people telling me to get highly specific jobs that often require highly specific degrees. “just go write for a magazine!” you need a journalism degree for that. “just teach!” you need a teaching certificate, and also fuck you. “just go work at a tutoring place!” tutoring children with learning disabilities, which make up the majority of the clientele at those places, requires not only a teaching certificate but a specialized master’s degree. “just go work at a library!” you need a master’s degree in library science to be a librarian. it is actually a highly skilled and extremely competitive field. you don’t just “go work at a library,” you train for years in the vain hope that you will get one of handful of available jobs. “just go work at a library.” the nerve. the unmitigated gall. “just go work at a library.” ugh.

serious question, what can you do with a bachelor’s in english?

take you in a fistfight, that’s for damn sure

Get four years of compliments (and the associated pay raises) about how your bug reports are absolutely the most clearly written and easiest to repro bug reports the dev team has ever seen.

(Then bail because the tech industry is honestly pretty toxic, and write cover letters that land you interviews for every job you apply at; you are offered the second one which is a nice desk job that pays less, is stable, has good benefits, and works really hard to make sure nobody ever has to work overtime.)

2019, 1/3rd

Progressing through the year continues:

I have 36 fics on my to-do list. (Progress!)

I have 11 original stories to revise or rewrite (it was 10, but then I wrote up the one that was just an idea), plus I finished a draft of the other weird thing I was working on.

I am up to 234 books at the intersection of “owned” and “to-read” in Goodreads! This is despite the fact that I read 5 books and several magazines this month. (There were a couple of really good sales on books, and also some Kickstarter rewards came in.)

Still liking the new job.

Finished the course. One student wrote in to say something nice after I’d finalized the grades, which felt very kind. None of the people I had to fail asked me about make-up work. I’m not sure what I could have done if they had, but I worry that I came across as too indifferent; I’d have tried something.

Getting a bit nervous about upcoming conventions–I am contemplating up to four this year, holy crap–but I’m sure I’ll get it sorted.

Done the sleeve of my sweater, started the shawl pattern I picked up, and am nearly done a completely unrelated hat that I started on Friday.

My “so-and-so has posted…” notifications from AO3 are at 150, out of 349 unread emails (42.98%).

For GYWO: 40 days of writing so far. Yes, I’m proud.

I have graded and given feedback on 83 assignments this weekend, and I don’t think I have the wherewithal to write a comment on fic for about a fortnight.

38 to go.

Progressing through the year continues:

I have 37 fics on my to-do list. (I know. I know.)

I have 10 original stories to revise or rewrite, plus this… other weird thing. Also one to write.

I have 229 books at the intersection of “owned” and “to-read” in Goodreads! Also I’ll have another one when I bother to create the record for one from a Kickstarter.

I think therapy’s pretty much done - I want a check-in next month to see how I’m adjusting to some stuff, but overall going pretty well.

The new job is being a bit more stressful, since they’re remodelling one of the floors and I’ve moved to a room that’s meant to fit two people sitting at a table and talking. Okay when it’s just me, bit cramped when it’s two people each trying to work at a desk, hella cramped when it’s three people all trying to get office stuff done. But the hour-long lunch breaks and the short work weeks really help.

Knitting is going well - very nearly done the sleeve of my sweater, and bought a shawl pattern I’ve been eyeing for a while.

My “so-and-so has posted…” notifications from AO3 are at 142, out of 281 unread emails (50.53%).

For GYWO: 24 days of writing so far.
