Spoilers for Flash #63!
The Forever Force..? Well, okay. Barry learns this issue that the various Forces are destined to battle for supremacy “and for control of the Forever Force”, though we don’t know what that is or what it does. The good news for those who aren’t keen on the Forces concept is that this revelation provides an obvious way to write them out, because they apparently can’t co-exist alongside the Speed Force and it likely isn’t going anywhere. So either Psych and the gorillas are wrong about them not being able to exist together, or the other Forces are going to lose.
Quite a bit happens in this issue. We learn that it was Hunter Zolomon who’d attacked Gorilla City the first time, so he’s still up to no good, and Iris (probably correctly) suspects he’s trying to control the Forces and start the war between them. What he would gain from that is anyone’s guess, but if he’s still interested in making the Flashes better then that could be a reason…though his motives are somewhat different these days, so it’s possible he’s after something else. He may simply want power and/or revenge.
And Gemini suffers a gruesome fate at the hands of Psych; he furiously attacks Santiago for the betrayal last issue and leaves him brain-dead, which drives Belladonna mad. She’s left in Arkham before potentially being transferred to Iron Heights. I don’t have much affection for Gemini, but that was rather horrifying. We probably haven’t seen the last of her, and she’ll undoubtedly be out for blood if she ever regains her lucidity.
Plus Barry finally learns that Wally’s dead, which leads into the Flash annual out today. Mind you, if you read the Heroes In Crisis issue which also happens to be out today, you’ll see that there’s something hinky about Wally’s corpse…and oh dear, I fear that one of the rumours about the killer may be true :\ Considering that this issue reminds us of Hunter’s existence and troublemaking, though, it’s possible that he’s the murderer. We’ll see.
One interesting aspect of this issue is that Barry accepts that he needs to learn from others in order to be a better teacher. It’s a good lesson for any of us to remember because there’s a lot of truth to it; one isn’t likely to have much insight when they arrogantly think they’ve got nothing to learn from others.
There’s only the one page of Commander Cold and Detective Burns in James’ funhouse, which we saw earlier and doesn’t bode well. At this point I don’t think there’s much to say about it as we’ll have to see what happens, but I share the trepidation about what’s going to be done with James and hope he doesn’t get butchered. There could well be explainable extenuating circumstances — we’ll find out in March — or this could be a terrible clusterduck. As I said before, I’m okay with a situation like him being influenced by Neron so long as it doesn’t last a long time or become his new normal. Bonus points if it’s something he overcomes and tricks his way out of, which could be an interesting story.
So I guess this was a pretty good issue overall, though I’m personally not keen on the this Forever Force idea (I think the different Forces have overstayed their welcome) and am really hoping James isn’t truly a psycho. I thought the moments with Psych and Gemini were well done even if horrifying, and Psych and probably Belladonna have been set up to appear again. There’s a lot to digest here, and it’s nice to see that the plots continue to be furthered and none of it feels like filler.
I’m living in hope that Belladonna, who was stealing Psych’s Sage Force, was actually correct in her assertion that she saved Santiago and he’s inside her head. Because (1) gah, and (2) soft spot for characters who aren’t listened to, and (3) oh god there was so much Sage Force floating around and that stuff lets you pull people in, look at what happened in Iron Heights with Mick…!
Continuing with the trepidation. Trepidation fistbump. Will this day not end.
