Summary: Speaking of things spiralling. (But there is, at least, a less-fraught tangent.)

Very little happens, I suppose, especially since I trimmed out a short scene in which action was actually taken. Nonetheless, it’s up and I think I’m nearly done.

The clipped scene would have happened at the first text break - after Axel falls asleep, before he hits the third day - and it follows here:

Piper’s out doing whatever the hell he was supposed to be doing for Cold and Axel gets to actually be sure he won’t be around for a bit and that makes it easier to think. A little. And yeah, he thinks about leaving.

Thinking about leaving means he remembers why he can’t, he remembers Jesse, and that helps. He needs the Rogues more than they need him right now, and he can cope with whatever he needs to do to stick around and find Jesse and get him to be okay again. That’s the point, that’s how it works, he can do it.

He just doesn’t know what it is, or why it isn’t already happening.

At least in Iron Heights he got how things worked.

(Also in Iron Heights it was a lot harder to find anything to take the edge off and keep from spinning out. It’s not enough to really fix his mood or anything, but Axel will take what he can get right now.)

He’s waiting in the living room when Piper comes back so late it’s early, but before he even really gets to say something Piper hangs up his coat and cuts him off with “Not now.”

“So when’s good for you?” and Piper just looks right through him, all flat indifference and drawn face. It’s that look like when he’s working on something so hard he forgets there are people except for them being something he can’t explain things to.

“Not now, Axel,” he says, same flat tired way he said Please be careful when Axel was kidding around about how he never set a fire by accident, and starts down the hall. Axel is starting to get angry, feels it jittering through his hands, he doesn’t understand but if he could just get a single honest fucking reaction out of Piper he could start to figure it out–

His bones remember the cold and he can’t move.

At the end of the hall, the door to Piper’s room swings neatly shut.
